At the Sony Ericsson party in Barcelona last week MobileBurn had the chance to sit down with some SE executives and talk about their new handsets. The inaugural M series handset, the UMTS/GSM M600, shares a large percentage of its components with the W950 Walkman phone that was announced later that night.

The XDA Atom communicator by O2 operator is made by the Taiwanese company Quanta Computer. With time this model will come out under other trademarks (name will be different, design will be slightly changed).

Operators and handset makers are moving toward standardizing on just a few mobile phone operating systems. They're likely to choose relatively open platforms with large developer groups, according to experts at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona on Wednesday -- but that doesn't necessarily mean that end-users will soon be able to freely download lots of new applications, they said.

G-Tek has reportedly used Linux in a very basic, simple, dual-mode WiFi/quad-band GSM/GPRS phone that can provide Internet access to PCs and PDAs connected via USB or Bluetooth. The PWG500 can also provide "seamless roaming" between WiFi and mobile networks, when used with LongBoard's FMC software (fixed-mobile convergence), the companies say.

Nanoradio AB has launched a new miniature Wi-Fi chipset solution named NRX700 for portable electronic devices. The NRX700, with a total die size of only 20 mm2 is the smallest footprint in the market.
