Hidden dangers of free public WiFi

We all love the convenience of WiFi to stay connected anywhere our laptops take us. In fact, you may be reading this article on your wireless-enabled laptop now. But just as the availability of WiFi services proliferate, so does the number of hackers ready to take advantage of unsuspecting road warriors. Now, in addition to long check-in and security lines, the uninformed have one more thing to be anxious about at the airport--identity thieves.

Review: Touch Screen Nokia 6708 Smartphone

The Nokia 6708 is the latest smartphone from Nokia, and the first to feature a touch screen. Looking suspiciously like the BenQ P31 that was announced eons ago, the 6708 runs on the UIQ platform, similar to the one found in the Sony Ericsson P-series of smartphones. With a 1.3 megapixel camera and Bluetooth v1.1, the Nokia 6708 seems equipped with yesterday's technology. It is a tri band GSM (900/1800/1900 MHz) phone, so business users who travel frequently will have to look elsewhere, since this isn't a world phone.

Button-cell devices to gain Bluetooth-like networking

Nokia and several partners are developing an ultra-low-power, short-range wireless technology aimed at extending personal-area networking (PANs) to really low-power devices, including watches, heart-rate monitors, and other "button cell battery" devices. The companies expect to release the first commercial "Wibree" interoperability specification by Q2, 2007.

Future trends of S60-based devices development

As a prelude, we are going to look into the history of what is called one of the most spread platforms for smartphones - Series60, or simply the S60. By a platform here we mean a software shell including system tools, operating system and a set of user-applications. As a rule all Nokia-branded products, running on the same platform edition, retain similar hardware specifications (CPU type, frequency, circuit technique), though exception do occur. Differences in camera modules, storage size and supported memory card type are not crucial, as they might be embedded in any hardware platform.

In Depth Review: The BlackBerry 8703e For Verizon Wireless

Recently I upgraded from my older, but classic, BlackBerry 7250 to the new BlackBerry 8703e. I had been waiting for an 8700 series CDMA BlackBerry for almost a year now and on September 15, 2006 the 8703e was officially released on verizonwireless.com. Now, I've been using my trusty 7250 for over a year and have grown very fond of the device. Over time I became very familiar with it and all of its features and I felt like I knew it better than the back of my hand. So once I finally got the 8703e I was a little afraid to actually make the switch, but I had been hearing that it was a worthy upgrade, so I took my chances.

What's ahead in mobile technology

"UMTS 3G barely got off the ground before HSDPA was launched, and HSUPA is on the horizon," one of the managers laments. "And are mobile WiMax and FLASH-OFDM 4G, or is 4G something else entirely?" Maybe that's not real-world barstool chit-chat, but it does reflect the maze of terms and acronyms -- and confusion -- that is accompanying new and future generations of mobile broadband service.

What's special about the Samsung D900 is that it's the slimmest slider in the market today with a 3.2 MP camera on it, a technological marvel. Read on for OSNews' review, screenshots of the system, camera samples and a hands-on video.

REVIEW: Dell PDA x50/51/v Vaja Case

Vaja were very kind to send us another great quality product for a review, their DE51 case, which fits all versions of the Dell x50/51 PDAs. Read on for more information and lots of pictures.

The case is made with the same high quality leather skin Vaja has used us with on their other products. Just by looking alone it shows that this is a durable material and by... smelling it you can have the confirmation you need.

Sliding our x50v inside the case was an easy matter, although users who use the higher capacity battery will make the device to not fit in the case. There are accurate cuts all over the ports and buttons for easy access and the screen is protected fully when the case is closed. You will find cuts for all the ports and buttons (even for the reset hole) except the power button. We found it very difficult to turn on and off the device by pressing the covered power button. We had to press about 4 times more strongly to get the device turn on or off.

On the inside part of the case you will find a cutout for money, two business cards and 2 SD cards. This is extremely handy as for some people this will be enough to not use a wallet anymore.

We loved the snap-on magnetic closure. The case can securely close easily, without applying any pressure at all, this is a great innovation.

The only thing that is extremely annoying though is that it's almost impossible to use the joystick at the bottom easily. The cutout all across the bottom part of the PDA is very close to the actual joystick so when you try to press the "down" key your finger finds a stoppage on the actual case instead of finding the button itself. This is a major usability problem. Another small problem for some might be the fact that with the case fitted you can't insert the PDA on its cradle.

Other than these two issues mentioned above this is a great case that can protect your valuable PDA from drops and scratches, while it can double as a small wallet.
